When looking at Console.app the culprit seems to be macOS' WindowServer (see attached crash report): Deactivating 3D acceleration does not solve this issue. It seems to me the issue occurs more quickly when I have many windows open, but I haven't validated this systematically yet.The issue only occurs when the VM is running - absolutely no problems, when the VM is turned off or suspended.Using a freshly booted host and/or guest OS does not make any difference. Then, again, I have a couple of minutes running the VM until the same issue happens again. When logging in, the VMware is not visible anymore (but still running), so I have to suspend and restart the VM. After some of these freezes (sometimes just a few minutes, sometimes after an hour), everything goes black, I am back at the macOS login screen. What is happening? When using the VM over time the whole system (both guest OS and host OS) hangs for some seconds every other minute. The problem exists in both VMware Fusion 11.5.5 and 11.5.6. I have not yet encountered the memory leak as the system is crashing before. Since then I have updated to 10.15.6, but the issue remains. The issue emerged when using macOS Catalina 10.15.5, so I do not think it is related to the known issue relating to the memory leak. I am using VMware Fusion 11.5 on my MacBook Pro (15", 2018) and for a couple of weeks now, my whole system has become mostly unusable when the VM is running. If there is no way to do this, I want the developers to implement the capability (just like like samba mentioned above) ![]() my apologies for the long explanation above but if there is a setting at Fusion/VMware tools to have system attributes for shared folders (for Windows guest), I want to know how to set. However those shared folders do not have the system attribute - or I should say Fusion/VMware tools does not seem to emulate/tell Windows about this attribute) therefore Windows must be unable to do anything with icons for those shared folders.Īs a matter of fact, you CAN change the folder icons for SMB shared folders if you have 'store dos attributes = yes' setting in samba's configuration. Per my reasearch, the icon information for a folder in Windows OS is decribed in the 'desktop.ini' file which is created/placed in the very folder, and in order for Windows to show the icon based on the description there, the desktop.ini file must have the system attribute. I have done a quite bit search in hoping there could be a way to do this and I have concluded that this is something we need to at the Fusion and VMware tool side and NOT at the Windows guest. In order to achieve the above objective, changing icons of folders were quite effective BEFORE I migrate the enviroment to the VM.Īfter the migration, I had realized the fact that you cannot change the icons for those shared folders and I got quite disappointed. ![]() If I had just a couple of folders I would not care but I have a bunch of folders on my desktop which are based on categories and I want to have quick access to the files in a folder of the interest. That is you cannot change icons for these shared folders!! I am running a Windows VM on top of Fusion Pro and sharing Desktop and other folders through VMware tool.Įverything works fine and I like the environment pretty much EXCEPT one thing. ![]() VMware Fusion Pro 11.5 under MacOS 10.15.6 (Catalina)
